H.N. Werkman — Linear Abstractions & Fragmented Figures (c. 1920s–1930s, Triptych)

This triptych presents three works by Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman that explore a more restrained and graphic side of his abstract practice, developed during the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Unlike Werkman’s more colour-forward compositions, these works place emphasis on line, interruption, and negative space. Figures appear fragmented rather than formed — suggested through outlines, crossings, and partial silhouettes. Colour is used sparingly and deliberately, acting as counterweight rather than focal point.

What defines this set is its sense of pause. Lines hesitate, forms dissolve, and space is allowed to breathe. The compositions feel less like images to be read and more like moments caught mid-thought — abstract studies that reward distance as much as close inspection.

Seen together, the three works create a measured visual cadence. There is variation without disruption, cohesion without repetition. The triptych functions as a single, unified statement, making the experience of viewing the set distinctly different from encountering the works individually.

Framed cleanly and presented with generous white margins, this collection is especially suited to private interiors such as bedrooms or reading spaces, where subtlety and atmosphere matter more than impact. The works bring structure and quiet tension to a room without overwhelming it.

For those collecting with intention, the set is offered as it was conceived — as a complete grouping. When purchased together, the triptych is priced at 15% less than buying each print separately, reinforcing both the visual and practical value of the collection.

This third Werkman set reveals an artist in control of restraint: abstract, precise, and quietly confident.
